THE FORTRESS OF THE POPES: CASTEL SANT'ANGELO TOUR
Private Tour - Skip the line! (2 hours, 150,00 €)
Standing majestically on the Tiber river, Castle of the Holy Angel ("Castel Sant'Angelo") it was made famous by the melodies of Puccini's Tosca and Dan Brown's novel "Angels and Demons". I suggest you visit this impressive fortress, one of Rome's most famous symbols, converted for many different uses both by Emperors and Popes in its 20 century existence! Located quite close to Vatican City, the site originally was the "Hadrianeum" (139 AD), the Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum, built for himself and his successors, then it became part of the city wall and later it served as Pope's residence (the refugee of the popes "under siege"), used also as a jail and finally converted into a museum.
