The Emperor Constantine, the year later the victory on the Battle at the Milvian Bridge (October 28th, 312 AD), issued the Edict of Milan and agreed to end the persecution of Christians. The public worship of Christ was not more forbidden and Constantine, followed by his successors, influenced the development of Christian architecture commissioning the building of the most significant Roman basilicas of the early Church. This was the beginning of the Christian Rome. The itinerary is aimed at discovering outstanding places: the "Papal Basilica" of St. John in Lateran (San Giovanni in Laterano) - the Mother and first of all the churches in Rome and around all over the world; next to the Cathedral, the Holy Stairs ("Scala Santa"), made by 28 stairs, which are said to have been climbed by Jesus in Jerusalem. It’s supposed to have been moved to Rome in 326 by the Empress Santa Elena, mother of Costantine I. For many centuries this was the spot most visited by pilgrims who still climb the stairs on their knees; The Basilica of Holy Cross in Jerusalem (Santa Croce in Gerusalemme) with Chapel of the Relics, where the fragments of the Holy Cross and other relics are kept. |
